August's desktop

It's been a while since I posted anything at all, and besides my never changing wallpaper (which seems to bother other people more than it bothers me, strangely) quite some stuff has changed. I've ditched the calendar altogether and integrated the mail notifications into my main conky bar at the bottom of the screen. The tint2 configuration saw some minor aesthetical changes.
I added three conky instances - one to show album art, a second one to show MPD playback info, and a third one to display weather info. The files linked to on this page will set you up with a 100x100 album art display (it is 120x120 on the screenshot); of course you can change this to your liking. The two MPD-related conky instances will disappear if Ncmpc is shut down - the program this depends on can also be changed. The weather instance gets its input fed by the ubiquitous conkyForecast python script, which can be configured through a template to parse multiple entries (e.g. weather for today and the next few days, temperature(s) for today and the next few days, ...) with one script call, thus minimising load. Since conkyForecast has grown into a full-blown package with a configuration file, a template and accompanying fonts, I won't put the script up for download but just link to the AUR page.

the weather "applet" is cool
Anonymous — Wed, 16/09/2009 - 20:01I like the weather "applet" the most. It's solid, light and gives enough information.
Great is that you put up your configuration, really kind of you!
Cheers,
the always drunken avarus :P.

What would even be nicer is if I could toggle it to hide/unhide so my desktop would be as 'clean' as before (I know, I know...). Apparently Dzen2 can something like that but I never looked into it.

Anonymous — Tue, 08/09/2009 - 06:29Very nice.
I don't have the patience to set up something fancy like this, I just slap KDE on and go.
Just a quick suggestion. It might look cool if you put some rounded-corner, black/dark gray, low opacity rectangles on the wallpaper under the conky boxes. It'd also be easier on the eyes.

Opaque conky backgrounds
B (not verified) — Tue, 08/09/2009 - 23:49Thanks, I've been thinking about it, but I'm not sure (actually I never played with conky backgrounds). It could definitely be useful for the information bar at the bottom, but the weather report and music info are perfectly readable (actually the weather is meant to blend in all except for the prognosis for today).
